Sellwood Baptist Church Declaration of Faith
We affirm historic Christian orthodoxy as represented in the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed. In addition to this, we receive the following Statement of Faith as an accurate representation of the teaching of Scripture.
We believe the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. We believe that the Bible has supreme authority over all matters of faith and life.
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three equally divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that God is the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, and that he sustains and sovereignly rules over all things. We believe that God is worthy of the complete worship and adoration of all people.
We believe that God created man, both male and female, in his own image to glorify him. We believe that man sinned against God and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is eternal separation from God. We believe that all human beings are born with a sinful nature and are sinners by choice in thought, word and deed. We believe that as a consequence of sin, every human being is deserving of the just, eternal wrath of God.
We believe in Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, who became man without ceasing to be God. We believe that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. We believe in his sinless life, his substitutionary death, his bodily resurrection, his ascension into heaven, his present seat at the right hand of the Father, and in his future visible return to earth.
We believe that salvation is a gift of God, received by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus Christ died as the substitutionary representative for sinners, so that all who repent of their sins and put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are new creatures. We believe that such persons have been delivered from condemnation and are justified before God on the basis of Christ’s shed blood alone, and not on the basis of their works. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells all the regenerate, progressively maturing them in holiness.
We believe that Christ is the head of the universal Church wherein all regenerated persons are members. We believe that the universal Church finds expression in local churches wherein believers agree together to sustain and celebrate the preaching of God’s Word, to share in the Lord’s Supper, to build each other up in love, to hold each other accountable through Biblical discipline, and to engage in the evangelization of the lost. We believe that membership to a local church should be reserved for believers who have been baptized upon a credible profession of faith.
We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the future establishment of the new heavens and the new earth, the eternal joy of the saved, and the endless suffering of all of those who remain outside of Christ and therefore in their sins.
