Getting to know Pastor Mike Wilson

Lead Pastor

Michael Wilson has been our lead pastor since November 1994. He is the 17th pastor Sellwood Baptist Church has had since it was organized in 1904. He graduated from college in 1972 with an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education, having majored in geography and history. Then he attended Western Baptist Seminary in Portland OR, graduating in 1976 with a Master of Divinity degree with a specialty in World Missions. He served as a youth pastor for four years while attending seminary. However, in July 1976 after being ordained, he and his family were commissioned under the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society (now called World Venture) as missionaries to South Brazil. Pastor Mike served in Sao Paulo until 1992, ministering in the areas of evangelism, leadership development, and Bible teaching. Besides his ministry here at Sellwood, Pastor Mike also serves as a police chaplain for the Portland Police Bureau, and is assigned to Central Precinct in downtown Portland.

Pastor Mike's wife, Ramel, is also active in the ministry here at Sellwood Baptist, working especially in the area of Women's Ministries but also helping in the area of Christian Education. During the week she works full-time for the Portland Police Bureau as a senior administrative assistant, and is currently assigned to East Precinct.

Mike and Ramel have three grown, married children: Jonathan (Sharon), Christopher (Luciana), and Simoni (Josh). They also have six grandchildren with two more on the way.
