Like individuals, churches too sometimes need encouragement. The Lord's work is often difficult and discouragements are numerous. It is easy to feel the struggle is a losing cause. On the other hand, each additional member means another helper and that brings hope and joy. Your decision to join becomes a vote of confidence that God has given us a serious task, that we are on the right track in the furtherance of His work, and He is fulfilling His promise to send our "laborers for the harvest".

All of God's children are to grow spiritually; that is, become more and more like the Lord Jesus. Just like physical growth is not visible every single day, so spiritual progress is not always measurably apparent. However, growth continues - even if it's unseen. This process occasionally proceeds at a faster rate, especially at various stages of discipleship that are at the same time both points of trial and triumph. Such a step is church membership. It is a test of commitment and submission to His Kingdom's work, and can therefore be a means of accelerated spiritual growth. It is our hope and prayer that each person united with Sellwood Baptist Church will find the membership decision and process to be a strong step forward in Christian growth.

All of the previous reasons for membership would apply just as well to any other sound church. Yet ultimately a person must choose some specific local church to join. Why Sellwood Church? What factors will help you make your choice?

First, let us say that we want every prospective member to follow the leading of the Lord. While we may be humanly sorry if a person joins elsewhere, we are never upset if he does so at the direction of the Holy Spirit. God knows where each person is needed.
