Core Beliefs

SERVING

We believe that every Christian is to be a worker for the Lord in some way or other. In Ephesians 4:11-12 the apostle Paul explains that God has given to the church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers "for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ." Therefore, we do our best to help every member and regular attender of Sellwood Baptist Church discover his/her spiritual gifting and enabling, and then provide opportunities for service which match the person and their abilities.

LEADERSHIP

We believe that everything rises or falls on leadership. This is true in business but it is also true in a local church. We believe that the best way to get good leaders is to grow your own rather than wait for them to serendipitously fall from the sky. Therefore, we are committed to multiplying leaders through a mentoring/leadership training program. At SBC we ask that our leaders, whether men or women, be F.A.T. G.U.Y.S. This has nothing to do with their waist line or their weight, however. The acronym stands for:

  • Faithful - to the Lord, the Word, the family, the pastor, etc.
  • Available - willing to make time to serve God and the church
  • Teachable - open to be shaped, corrected, and instructed
  • Godly - with a life that demonstrates purity and integrity
  • Unshakable - firm in faith and steady and courageous under fire
  • Yielded - always ready to say "Yes" to God, even when it costs
  • Servant - a servant heart and a willingness to not get credit
